WWE Night of Champions (2023) Confirmed Match Card

Seth "Freakin" Rollins vs. AJ Styles: World Heavyweight Championship Match

During the April 24 episode of Raw, the esteemed WWE Chief Content Officer, Triple H, unveiled the World Heavyweight Championship for the brand that had not drafted the current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns, in the 2023 WWE Draft. It was announced that the new champion would be crowned at Night of Champions, although it remains unclear whether this championship revival is a nod to the previous World Heavyweight Championship, contested from 2002 to 2013, or if it is a brand new title that bears the same name.

It is worth noting that Reigns was drafted to SmackDown during the draft, effectively making the World Heavyweight Championship exclusive to Raw. To determine the new champion, a tournament was set up featuring wrestlers from both brands, with a bracket for each brand. The first round and semifinals for each bracket were scheduled for the May 8 and May 12 episodes of Raw and SmackDown, respectively.

The first round matches for each episode consisted of two triple threat matches, with the respective winners advancing to the semifinals in a singles match on the same night. The winners of these semifinals would advance to the championship match at Night of Champions. The 12 tournament participants were unveiled on May 7 on WWE's YouTube channel.

In the end, Raw's bracket was triumphantly won by the talented Seth "Freakin" Rollins, while SmackDown's bracket was victoriously won by the legendary AJ Styles. This meant that Rollins and Styles would face off in the tournament final for the World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions. The stage was set for a momentous clash between these two elite competitors, with the victor destined to etch their name in the annals of wrestling history.

WINNER PREDICTION: Seth Rollins

Singles Match: Cody Rhodes Vs. Brock Lesnar

In a stunning upset at Backlash, Cody Rhodes emerged victorious over the formidable Brock Lesnar, much to the shock of the WWE universe. However, Rhodes' elation was short-lived as he found himself embroiled in the highly anticipated tournament for the World Heavyweight Championship.

During the first round triple threat match that Rhodes was competing in, Lesnar made a shocking appearance, brutally attacking Rhodes and robbing him of his chance to vie for the prestigious title. Such nefarious behavior did not go unnoticed by Rhodes or the WWE officials.

Unrelenting in his quest for redemption, Lesnar subsequently challenged Rhodes to another match at Night of Champions, determined to prove his dominance over the scrappy newcomer. Despite the daunting challenge that lay ahead, Rhodes fearlessly accepted Lesnar's challenge, eager to prove his mettle against one of the most feared competitors in WWE history.

WINNER PREDICTION: Brock Lesnar

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn (c) Vs. The Bloodline (Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa) (with Paul Heyman)

In the marquee bout of Night 1 at WrestleMania 39, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn dethroned The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) to seize the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship. The new champions defended their gold in a rematch on the April 28 edition of SmackDown and prevailed yet again.

However, at Backlash, The Bloodline (The Usos and Solo Sikoa) toppled Owens, Zayn, and Matt Riddle in a ferocious six-man tag team contest, with Sikoa securing the victory for his team, albeit with tension brewing between himself and The Usos.

The ensuing SmackDown saw Bloodline leader Roman Reigns commending Sikoa for his performance, but chastising The Usos for relinquishing their championship titles and failing to recapture them. In a stunning announcement, the faction's mouthpiece Paul Heyman revealed that he had secured another tag team title match for The Bloodline, but rather than The Usos, Reigns and Sikoa would challenge Owens and Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship at Night of Champions.

WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: Gunther(c) Vs. Mustafa Ali

Mustafa Ali emerged victorious in a grueling battle royal on the May 15 episode of WWE Raw, thus earning the coveted distinction of the number one contender for the Intercontinental Championship. Outlasting a star-studded field of competitors, including the likes of Riddle, Ricochet, and Bronson Reed, Ali's impressive display culminated in a stunning dropkick to Reed, who was standing on the apron with Ricochet on his shoulders.

Ali will now set his sights on Gunther's Intercontinental Title, which he is slated to challenge for at the highly anticipated Night Of Champions premium live event. It is worth noting that this will be Gunther's first defense of the prestigious title since his successful title defense on the April 21 episode of WWE SmackDown.

For Ali, this title opportunity marks a significant milestone in his career, as he will be competing for a championship for the first time since December 5th, when he fell short in his valiant bid for the United States title against Austin Theory.

2. Bianca Belair Vs. Asuka -WWE Raw Women's Championship Match

Bianca Belair's remarkable tenure as the Raw Women's Champion shows no signs of relenting, as she continues to astound the WWE Universe. Following her decisive triumph over Asuka at WrestleMania, followed by a breathtaking victory over IYO SKY at WWE Backlash, Belair has now etched her name as the longest-reigning women's champion in the modern era.

In a tribute to her illustrious achievement, The EST organized a grand Championship Celebration in her cherished hometown of Knoxville. However, Belair's jubilant moment was abruptly disrupted when Asuka, her fierce adversary, unexpectedly ambushed her. With a swift and unexpected motion, Asuka unleashed a noxious mist, blinding The EST and leaving her reeling.

Through this audacious attack, Asuka unequivocally solidified a highly anticipated WrestleMania rematch with Belair, slated to take place at WWE Night of Champions. As fate would have it, both competitors were subsequently drafted to SmackDown, intensifying their rivalry. The once-collaborative duo, who had triumphed together as partners in the inaugural WWE Women's WarGames Match at Survivor Series WarGames, have now transformed into bitter foes. Belair, fueled by an unwavering desire for retribution, finds herself driven to match Asuka's sheer ferocity and ruthlessness.

WINNER PREDICTION: Bianca Belair

Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Natalya: WWE SmackDown Women's Championship

In the captivating May 12 episode of Raw, the indomitable SmackDown Women's Champion, Rhea Ripley, emerged triumphant in a resounding non-title clash against Dana Brooke. However, Ripley's competitive fire refused to wane as she launched a relentless assault on Brooke, prompting the valiant Natalya to valiantly rush to her comrade's aid.

In the subsequent week, Natalya expressed her deep dismay at Ripley's unsportsmanlike conduct, deeming it a flagrant display of disrespect towards a vanquished opponent. In response, Ripley swiftly retorted, insinuating that Natalya's intentions of sharing the ring with her were merely a desperate ploy to regain relevance. Furthermore, Ripley firmly warned Natalya that any further interference would result in the irrevocable termination of her illustrious career.

With tension reaching its boiling point, the following episode featured an electrifying proclamation from Ripley, as she boldly declared her intentions to conclude Natalya's storied career at Night of Champions. This momentous announcement solidified the clash between the two titans for the highly coveted SmackDown Women's Championship, promising an awe-inspiring showdown of unparalleled magnitude.

Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus: Singles match

On the captivating April 10 episode of Raw, an unexpected twist unfolded as Trish Stratus, alongside the resilient Becky Lynch, valiantly stepped in to defend the prestigious WWE Women's Tag Team Championship in place of the injured Lita. However, fortune did not favor their valiant efforts, as they suffered defeat in the match, with Stratus bearing the brunt of the pinfall, resulting in a bitter loss for the formidable duo. This setback proved to be a turning point, as it marked Stratus' remarkable return to her villainous persona after a hiatus that spanned back to 2005.

The aftermath of the match witnessed an intense upheaval, as Stratus, fueled by her newfound dark side, unleashed a fierce assault upon Lynch, solidifying her wicked alignment. In a subsequent week, the truth behind a mysterious backstage attack on Lita was unveiled, with Stratus boldly revealing herself as the perpetrator. She seized the opportunity to lash out at Lynch, driven by her belief that Lynch erroneously attributed the resurgence of the women's division solely to herself. Stratus, emphatically asserting her pivotal role in elevating the status of women's wrestling, lamented Lynch's failure to express gratitude, while vehemently declaring that she had not returned to serve as anyone's subordinate.

Amidst weeks of scorn and ridicule, Lynch, fueled by a burning determination, made a resounding comeback on the highly anticipated May 8 episode. With an element of surprise on her side, she valiantly launched an impassioned attack on Stratus, seeking retribution for the humiliation endured.
