The top-notch fighter of 2020, Khamzat Chimaev came out of nowhere to capture the vision of fight fans around the world, and on March 13 in the main event, he headlines his first UFC event when he faces the third-ranked welterweight in the world, Leon Edwards.
White confirmed to MMA Junkie
that the UFC has booked Edwards and Chimaev to face off in the main event of the promotion’s upcoming UFC Fight Night card on March 13. The event currently does not have a confirmed venue or host city.
As noted, Chimaev was scheduled to face Leon Edwards in the main event of UFC Fight Night 183 on December 19, 2020. In between, Chimaev was added to the UFC welterweight rankings, entering at #15. On November 29, it was announced that Chimaev had tested positive for COVID-19, and the bout was declared to be on jeopardy.
On December 1, Edwards also tested positive for COVID-19 and the bout was subsequently postponed. On December 22, it was announced that the bout was rescheduled for January 20, 2021, at UFC Fight Night 185. Subsequently, Chimaev pulled out of the contest on December 29 due to his own COVID-19 recovery. As a result, the bout was cancelled.
Now both men have been given a clean act of health, and are set to finally face off in a pivotal bout for the UFC’s welterweight division.
